This is my first time blogging and I am not quite sure how this all works but here goes.....I am a student at Minnesota State University Mankato, I am pursuing a degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Speech Communication. I am about to graduate in December of this year but I must admit I am a little nervous. Where do I go from here? I know the possibilities can be endless and that this is really the start of my life but how do I get started? MSU has given me the tools I need to start a career in PR and I am confident in my skills but I still have some questions. I want to know, who are some good people to contact for job oppurtunities? I recently created a twitter account (follow me adamw23) and that has been helpful for the most part but I still do not know much about it. I know I want to do something in sports, preferably with the Minnesota Vikings but I am not too sure how to break into the business.
I also have a degree in Radio Broadcasting from Brown College and I am hoping that will help me in finding a job. This summer I will begin my internship with KEYC T.V. which is the local Television station here in Mankato. I am excited to get started with them because I will learn how to shoot and edit video, write stories, update web material and much more. One of my assignments will be to work with the sports department at Vikings training camp! I am hoping that this might be a way into the organization who knows?
I guess what I am trying to say with all of this is where do I go from here? As I mentioned I will have a degree in PR, a minor in speech, a degree in Radio Broadcasting and a completed internship in T.V. Sounds confusing I know! I am all over the board and it seems like I have no clue what I want to end up doing in the long run but whatever it is I want to make sure it is my passion and my dream!
If anyone reading this has any suggestions about pursuing a career after college or who to contact or any info about job applications or resumes let me know! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Great first post Adam!
ReplyDeleteI would say if you want to break into the field, for sure use your training camp time as a way to make connections with anyone and everyone there. Do you have any business cards made up? That would be a great thing to have by training time because when you meet people, that is how they may remember you later.
Also, I would find people on twitter who are involved in vikings sports news and follow them and comment frequently. Maybe later on when you are applying for jobs you can say "I follow you on twitter. I'm adamw23." Or something like that.
I don't really know much about applying for jobs either, but those sound to me like stuff that would help. ^^
Yes, I agree you are all over the place - but holy crap you have a lot of experience!! With the training camp experience I think you won't have a problem with getting into at least get an interview with them. Do what you do best -- be personable and fun and you'll do great!
ReplyDeletePlus remember your tall so use it to your advantage!

ReplyDeleteThis is a great first post on a nice blog. I agree with the others..you have some great skills that can be translated into the job search.
Learn all you can about video now at KEYC and make yourself invaluable during training camp. What an opportunity!
Thank you all so much! I appreciate all the positive advice!
